Proposed changes in 401(k)

Secretary Timothy Giethner recently proposed changes in the rules associated with 401k accounts. The proposed rules allows for transfers from 401k accounts for investments in annuity accounts.

The goal here is to create a constant stream of income commensurate with longer life expectancies. With about 70 million Americans using 401k as their primary source for retirement and the average life expectancy increasing, this development is seen as prudent and timely.

Some insiders are however concerned about the complex nature of annuities and believe efforts to educate consumers will begin to percolate as managers simplify the products they bring to market.
